Absolutism (Homework or in-class)

1) What is absolutism?

Absolutism is a theory in which the monarch has great power and rules with absolute sovereignty.

2) Explain the justification for absolutism referred to as the 'divine right of kings'.

Jacques-Benigne Bossuet affirmed that abosulte power could be justified through the divine right of kings to rule- an authority given to monarchs directly by god.

3) List the causes of the rise of Absolutism in Europe.

Practical considerations
Protestant Reformation
Mercantile policies

4) In your opinion, is absolutism a good way to rule? Can you think of a situation where it might be a positive thing?

In my opinion, I believe that absolutism is a poor way to rule, due to the chaos it brings. Many disagreements rise and can lead to disasters. Absolutism may be good when a state needs guidance from one powerful ruler who can decide choices right away.
